Microsoft has rolled out another major update to Office 2008 for Mac that it's calling Service Pack 2. Bringing Office 2008 up to version 12.2.0, the update includes a number of bug fixes, performance improvements, and feature additions. It also includes a new Document Connection tool that makes working with Microsoft Office Live Workspace and SharePoint better, enabling easier cross-platform collaboration.
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Entourage all got stability fixes, and Word and Excel specifically received several performance improvements. Word users should see quicker performance when using outline view, scrolling, and using Japanese characters with styles. Even launching Word is quicker. Excel should see improved performance when opening files from a networked server, using Pivot Tables, and when performing calculations.
We dug through the release notes for SP2, and spotted a few notable tweaks for each component of Office 2008. Word has improved display redrawing (particularly with bullets and numbering), a section indicator has been added to the status bar, audio notes that are added to a Notebook view will be auto-recovered if Word crashes before saving, and users of SpellCatcher X should see improved compatibility.
Excel got several improvements aimed at better compatibility, including working with Excel Web Services, improved compatibility with Windows versions of Excel—including 2007 and 2003, and improved support of XLM macros. The app also has improved handling of international dates and currency, fixes for issues with linked documents, and improved handling of Shapes and Word Art.
PowerPoint adds a couple of new features along with several bug fixes. New is the ability to define a new default template, to animate objects along an editable path, to double-click to quickly add a new text box to a slide, and to automatically switch to display mirroring when switching out of PowerPoint (to demo another application, for instance) and then switch back to presenter mode for the rest of a slide presentation. There are a number of improvements in the handling for formatting and fonts when working with other versions of PowerPoint or saving to .ppt format, and the spell checker should give users far less headaches. We'll leave it as an exercise for the reader to decide if the newly added support for animated GIFs is a bug or a feature.

Entourage got much less attention with this update, but it did get auto-configuration for MobileMe or Windows Live Hotmail accounts. It also now supports proxy auto-config files, updated junk e-mail filtering, and improved sending of encrypted and digitally signed e-mails.
Microsoft Document Connection is a new component of Office 2008 for Mac, and it's included in SP2. This desktop app aids users in environments that rely on either SharePoint or Windows Live Workspace to find, review, and edit documents collaboratively. In particular, it should help Office for Mac users collaborate more easily with their Windows-using colleagues. In addition, Safari 4 support has been added to SharePoint and Live Workspaces, making it easier for Mac users to join in the partyfun work. The upside is that you'll be able to get work done more easily, hopefully avoiding long e-mail chains full of slightly edited versions of a document. The downside is that you'll no longer be able to use poor Mac compatibility of SharePoint or Live Workspace as an excuse for extending deadlines.
For users of older versions of Office, the Mac BU has also released an updated version of the Open XML File Format converter, bringing it to version 1.1. This software lets users of Office 2004 for Mac or earlier convert the new, XML-based .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx files to versions that can be opened in the older versions of Office.
Both Office 2008 for Mac SP2 and Open XML File Format Converter 1.1 are available to download now from Microsoft's Mactopia site, or you can grab the updates via Office's Auto Update.
